About Aspire Dog Training

Puppy training sit

Hi, I’m John

If you've landed here, there's a good chance you're worried something isn't quite right with your dog, or that the training advice you've tried just isn't working. Maybe you've already been to a class and left more confused than when you arrived.

That feeling is more common than you think. And more often than not, it's not you, and it's not your dog.

It Started With Woody

Woody is my Cockapoo. He's three now, confident, happy, and the dog who changed everything.

As a puppy he was, to put it kindly, a handful. A rescue, bred from two highly intelligent working breeds, working cocker and poodle, with drives and needs that weren't being met. He didn't settle, his arousal was through the roof, and lead walking was a battle. I went from despair to fascination almost by accident, falling deep into understanding how dogs actually learn. The results were remarkable. What felt impossible became enjoyable, then genuinely joyful.

The Moment Everything Clicked

It came through scent work. When Woody was around seven months old I started channelling his relentless sniffing into something purposeful, and through that I began to understand breed-specific needs properly for the first time.

The second light bulb came when working with early clients. The "problem behaviours" owners wanted to stop weren't problems to the dogs at all. They were natural instincts trying to find an outlet. The dog had an itch it needed to scratch, and nobody had helped it find an appropriate way to do that.

That realisation changed how I see everything.

Why I Do This

A few years ago I was diagnosed with ADHD, after a lifetime of wondering why certain things others found effortless always felt harder for me. The diagnosis brought reflection, and a pull towards something with more purpose.

I'd been volunteering in the puppy school at Dogs Trust. I'd helped a friend with their new puppy and felt something click, the satisfaction of sharing what I'd learned and watching it work. I decided to train properly, not just an online certificate achieved in a couple of days, but something with genuine rigour. I enrolled with PACT, qualified as an Animal Training Instructor (ATI) and registered with the ABTC, the UK's professional regulatory body for dog trainers and behaviourists.

Aspire exists because dogs and their owners deserve someone who genuinely understands what a dog needs, not just six weeks of commands.
